Operation Spotlight is a project aimed at shining a bright light on those members of Congress who have taken more than half a million dollars of “dirty money” from polluting special interests and have voted against legislation to curb global warming pollution. To calculate the monetary figures cited, LCV collected data on political contributions from four sectors: oil & gas, electric utilities, automotive and transportation unions. LCV used the website of the Center for Responsive Politics (www.opensecrets.org) to pull data on the money contributed from these sectors to the congressional campaign committees for members of congress for the 2001-02, 2003-04 and 2005-06 election cycles. The data from each of these three cycles was combined to determine a multi-cycle total. The 19 members of Congress highlighted in Operation Spotlight reflect those members who received more than $500,000 from 2001-2006 from the selected polluting special interests. Additionally, LCV is highlighting how the members included in Operation Spotlight voted on 18 significant roll call votes in the House and Senate related to global warming and energy policy from the 109th and 110th Congresses.
