The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national priorities. To secure the environmental future of our planet, LCV’s mission is to advocate for sound environmental policies, to elect pro-environment candidates who will adopt and implement such policies and to provide the state LCVs with the resources and tools to accomplish and sustain their mission. The SVP for Campaigns oversees LCV’s Campaigns Department, which is responsible for developing and implementing the organization’s overall strategy on political and public education programs in order to support the organization’s goals. As an LCV Executive Team member, the SVP contributes to the successful operation of the entire organization, and works closely with each of the other Departments at LCV and with the Executive Directors of the state LCVs to support their programs and to develop new partnerships. The SVP oversees one of the largest electoral programs in the country and one of the largest climate programs focused on grassroots organizing.


  • Provides leadership and vision to the Campaigns Department, and supports the team in meeting the Department’s goals.
  • Develops issue campaigns, particularly tied to climate change, and LCV’s political plans, and ensures these campaigns are successfully implemented.
  • Works with the President and the Development Department in cultivating major donors and funders, and writes compelling proposals to build financial support for the organization’s campaign work.
  • Engages with the organizations’ Board of Directors on campaign priorities, and staffs two Board Committees, including the Political and Campaign Committee, which oversees LCV’s electoral work.
  • Supports the state LCV’s campaign work and searches for strategic campaign opportunities that will strengthen the state LCVs.
  • Builds strong partnerships with other institutions including environmental groups and other allied organizations.
  • Oversees and manages the Department’s budget which is at least $15 million in 2014.
  • Represents the organization to an array of groups including the political community, funders, press, and elected officials.
  • Works closely with all of LCV’s Departments to ensure that campaigns are well integrated across the organization, and supports the campaign’s related needs of other Departments.
  • Oversees LCV Education Fund’s global warming program, including our Latino and youth outreach efforts and all message research.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Education: College degree required.
  • Work experience: At least ten years campaign experience, including on environmental campaigns, and proven experience as an effective manager. Strong preference for experience working closely with state-level organizations.
  • Skills: Strong leadership skills; proven ability to develop compelling programs and campaigns, including strong writing skills; effective interpersonal and communications skills; working knowledge of federal election laws; demonstrates initiative, including the ability to seize strategic opportunities; collaborative with an ability to work closely with a diverse set of allies; familiarity and interest in environmental issues desirable; works well in a fast-paced environment and able to meet deadlines without sacrificing quality of work;
  • Conditions: Ability to work overtime with little notice; able to work hours exceeding stated office hours to get the job done; ability and willingness to travel. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
