Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Rita Hart in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District and J.D. Scholten in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District.

“LCV Action Fund is proud to support the campaigns of Rita Hart and J.D. Scholten as they run for Congress to represent Iowa,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We know that they will be champions for Iowans’ clean air and clean water and continue to expand the state’s clean energy economy.”

“I have lived in rural Iowa my whole life and Paul and I have owned a farm for over 30 years,” said Rita Hart. “I believe farmers and rural Iowans can lead the way in tackling the challenges of climate change and improving water quality in a way that works for everyone. We must also invest in renewable energies like wind and solar power — which are critical to growing Iowa’s economy. Working together, we can create jobs, revitalize rural Iowa, and pass on a livable planet to our children and grandchildren.”

“Our farmers are already losing profit, crops, equipment, and their homes and fields from record-breaking floods, droughts, and temperature changes,” said J.D. Scholten. “We cannot continue to delay addressing this crisis. We must bring farmers, rural communities, and all stakeholders to the table and quickly enact solutions that will strengthen our food security, protect our water and soil quality, and benefit our people, our land, our health, and our planet.”

Rita Hart is a state senator, teacher, farmer and was the 2018 Democratic candidate for Lieutenant Governor. In the state legislature, she has focused on bringing people together to protect Iowa’s clean water and co-sponsored legislation to grow Iowa’s wind energy sector. In Congress, Hart will fight for sustainable agriculture policies that will help farmers play a role in addressing and preparing for climate change.

J.D. Scholten is a fifth-generation Iowan who was born in Ames and grew up in Sioux City. He graduated from the University of Nebraska where he led the school’s baseball team to the College World Series. After college Scholten played baseball professionally and worked as a litigation paralegal during the off-season. In Congress, he will prioritize protecting rural Iowa’s air, water and lands, while working to further grow the clean energy economy in the Hawkeye State.
