Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today its endorsement of Senator Jeff Merkley for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Oregon.

“Senator Merkley is a tireless champion for our clean energy economy,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “He is truly leading the way in combating the climate crisis and transitioning to 100% clean energy, and we are thrilled to endorse him for reelection.”

“If we were in a spaceship deep in space, the number one, ironclad rule would be to take care of the spaceship at all costs. That is in fact the situation we’re in, but our beautiful blue-green spaceship is in trouble,” said Senator Jeff Merkley. “I’ve been proud to partner with LCV on the critical missions of meeting the climate crisis, protecting our special places, and keeping our air and water clean. Together, let’s fight to leave the next generation a home that’s a place of safety, health, and beauty.”

Previously a national security analyst and Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, Senator Jeff Merkley has been a leading voice for climate action since he entered the Senate in 2009. Since his first vote as Senator—in favor of a bill creating new wilderness, wild and scenic rivers, and national recreation areas—he has continuously championed conservation measures and a clean energy future. As a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, he has advocated for climate action and a transition to clean energy. He introduced landmark legislation to transition America to 100 percent renewable energy, and he wrote the Keep it in the Ground Act to stop oil and gas drilling on public lands and waters. Senator Merkley has introduced numerous pieces of legislation to transition from fossil fuels to clean energy, including zero-emission vehicles, honoring our global commitments as part of the Paris climate agreement, and protecting our coasts and the Arctic from drilling. His voting record in the U.S. Senate has earned him an outstanding 99% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard

Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
