LCV, Iowans Call on Sen. Chuck Grassley to Do His Job

May 4, 2016

Iowa – Today, the League of Conservation Voters released a video featuring Iowans calling on Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) to do his job and fulfill his constitutional responsibility on the Supreme Court vacancy. Given Sen. Grassley’s role as the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Iowans are disappointed that he is playing partisan politics and holding our democracy hostage.

You can view the video here.

“I’m a single mother, and I go to work every day because I have to,” said Emily from Des Moines. “Senator Grassley, it’s time for you to do your job, because our Supreme Court is too important to our country not to.”

“Chuck, it’s time to quite playing politics, and do your job,” said Dennis from Cedar Rapids.

“It’s time to do your job, because a functional government is more important than partisan politics,” said Alex from Grinnell.

LCV is also holding Sen. Grassley accountable in other ways. On Monday, in conjunction with the Constitutional Responsibility Project, LCV released a poll showing that a majority of Iowa voters disapprove of Sen. Grassley’s obstructionism. In addition, LCV is taking part in a coalition that is following Sen. Grassley across Iowa with a billboard, holding demonstrations, and asking him why he has refused to do his job.

LCV has also collected over 1,600 petition signatures calling on Sen. Grassley and his colleagues in the Senate to fulfill his constitutional responsibility on the Supreme Court vacancy, joining nearly 150,000 petition-signers nationally in calling on Senate Republicans to do their job.

“The Court truly plays a significant role in the lives of everyday Americans, including our right to breathe clean air, to drink clean water and to leave our children with a healthy planet. Iowans understand the importance of filling this vacancy, and Judge Garland is impeccably qualified,” said Tiernan Sittenfeld, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, League of Conservation Voters. “It is long past time for Senator Grassley along with other Senate Republican leaders to stop obstructing and to do their job.”

In addition to LCV’s work in Iowa, last Friday, in conjunction with the Constitutional Responsibility Project, LCV released a poll showing that Sen. Toomey’s position on the vacancy has hurt his standing with Pennsylvanians.
