Washington, DC – In response to the Senate failing to reach cloture on a continuing resolution to fund the government over an impasse relating to delivering aid to Flint, LCV Legislative Representative Madeleine Foote issued the following statement:

“With this legislation, Senate Majority Leader McConnell is risking a government shutdown by trying to say that one community is more deserving of disaster relief than another, and we thank those Senators who stood up in opposition to demand aid for the citizens of Flint, who still can’t drink their water. Whether it’s help recovering from damaging flooding exacerbated by climate change or dealing with the impacts of toxic lead poisoning, it’s time for Republican leadership to stop playing political games with people’s lives and finally provide necessary assistance. They should also drop efforts to include harmful policy riders, such as the prohibition on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from finalizing rules on the disclosure of corporate political spending, which are inappropriate for a funding bill.”
