The New Republic and Earther broke the big news this week: the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates are invited to join a climate summit in New York City on September 23!

In other news from the campaign trail, climate change continued to be a major focus for the candidates.

Senator Elizabeth Warren released a plan to require companies to publicly disclose both environmental and financial climate-related risks to their business.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg rolled out a comprehensive plan to address systemic racism, which includes a focus on environmental justice:

We will expand enforcement of environmental protections and invest in solutions to environmental threats, particularly focusing on communities of color and working families who face disproportionate health effects from pollution, tainted water, and inadequate infrastructure.

Former Vice President Joe Biden laid out his foreign policy vision for America, which included a call to “rally the world to address the existential climate crisis”:

The Biden administration will rejoin the Paris Climate Accord on day one and lead a major diplomatic push to raise the ambitions of countries’ climate targets.

Here are some additional climate highlights from the campaign trail this week:  

Climate change also continues to be a big issue in Iowa with state Senator Robb Hogg hosting a series “Climate Conversations” with the candidates. Thus far, Governor Inslee, author Marianne Williamson, and former Congressman Joe Sestak have participated in the forums, with Senator Michael Bennet, former Congressman Delaney, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, and Congressman Moulton scheduled to participate later this month.

Also, be sure to check out Shondaland’s new “20 for 2020” series with a questionnaire crafted by Shonda Rhimes herself! that includes a question for the candidates about how they would combat climate change. Thus far, the series includes responses from Senator Booker, Senator Gillibrand, Senator Harris, Governor Inslee, former Congressman O’Rourke, and Senator Warren.
