Jul 19, 2019

The stage is set for the second presidential debates in Detroit. We look forward to hearing how candidates will make climate change a top priority beginning on day one.

Here are some climate highlights from the campaign trail this week:

  • Former Vice President Joe Biden released his “Plan for Rural America,” which includes investing in wind and solar and helping farmers achieve net-zero emissions.
  • In New Hampshire, an LCV volunteer asked Senator Cory Booker if he’d make addressing the climate crisis a top executive prioritie on day one in the White House.
  • Governor Steve Bullock told Shondaland that as the governor of a state dealing with record wildfires, he’s losing sleep over climate change.
  • Mayor Pete Buttigieg talked about the connection between climate change and agriculture on the Recode Decode podcast.
  • At an event in Iowa, former HUD Secretary Julián Castro reiterated that one of his first executive orders would be to recommit the U.S. to the Paris climate agreement.
  • Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said that climate change is the biggest threat to America and reiterated her support for the Green New Deal while campaigning in Iowa.
  • Borrowing a line for Governor Jay Inslee (“It’s not my line, it’s his, but I love it.”), Senator Kamala Harris said wind turbines don’t cause cancer, “they cause jobs.”
  • Former Governor John Hickenlooper talked about climate change during a sit down with the Keene Sentinel editorial board.
  • Governor Jay Inslee answered questions about climate change from NowThis and Senator Jeff Merkley.
  • At a speech at the National Press Club, Senator Amy Klobuchar reiterated that she will take action on climate change on day one as president.
  • Philanthropist Tom Steyer signed the “No Fossil Fuel Money” candidate pledge.
  • During WMUR’s “Conversations with the Candidate,” Senator Elizabeth Warren said that “climate change is the existential threat.”

Finally, Senator Michael Bennet  former Representative John Delaney, Representative Tulsi Gabbard, and Representative Seth Moulton all participated in Iowa state Senator Rob Hoggs’ “Climate Conversations.”

Finally, we’re taking a brief look back at last month’s Miami debate where we joined our friends at Florida Conservation Voters at the Underwater Climate Rally. Check out the on-the-ground efforts to make climate action a top priority for Democratic candidates in this new video.
