LCV's efforts in California's 46th District demonstrates the effectiveness of the political strategy the Dirty Dozen campaign relied on to defeat an anti-conservation candidate. In a midterm election that came down to who voted, LCV Action Fund decided to focus our efforts on mobilizing the Latino vote and providing the necessary margin of victory. LCV's Latina organizer successfully brought home the message that Bob Dornan actively worked against issues that Latinos care about: the water they drink, the air they breathe, the quality of the environment for them and their children. Dirty Dozen Campaign Activities: Total budget: $60,000. Directed by a full-time, Latina campaign manager in Santa Ana, the Dirty Dozen campaign to defeat Bob Dornan took the message of his anti-environment voting record directly to the 46th district's Latino community. Bob Dornan attempted to fool voters by painting himself as a "Greenpeace kind of guy," yet ignored issues important to Latino families - clean water and clean air. Hitting the ground seven weeks out from election day, LCVAF's campaign manager contacted members of the Latino media and a wide range of community groups in the area. Several events held in the district highlighted Dornan's anti-environment record. One rally at a local elementary school highlighted Dornan's dirty air votes and a recent report revealing the dangers of polluter emissions near schools. Another rally blasting Dornan's dirty water record was held with a coalition of leaders from the Latino and African-American communities, and Green Party activists. On the Sunday before election day, a GOTV rally was held in downtown Santa Ana, followed by a motorcade to other Latino areas of the district. - LCVAF sent 66,000 pieces of direct persuasion mail on Dornan's anti-environment voting record in three waves. Twelve thousand newly registered Latino voters were contacted by our volunteer phone program. LCVAF's campaign also organized leafleting and other visibility projects in downtown Santa Ana and other shopping centers in the city.
- On election day, LCVAF put a rides-to-the-polls program in place.
