House : California (D, CA-07)

The former Chief Medical Officer of Sacramento County and Clinical Professor of Medicine at University of California – Davis and a first generation American, Dr. Ami Bera is committed to protecting the environment and public health. As a former board member for the Sacramento Tree Foundation, whose mission is to create the largest urban forest in America, Dr. Bera recognizes that improving the health and quality of life of our families and protecting our environment go hand in hand.

Dr. Bera has pledged to stand up to the undue influence of Big Oil companies, ending tax subsidies for dirty fuels and instead investing in clean, renewable resources. In Congress, he will work for a transition from a carbon-based and fossil-fuel dependent economy to one that is clean, self-sufficient, and can generate millions of good-paying jobs across every skill and education level. He is especially interested in new technologies and better education and training. He will also work to reduce water pollution.

Dr. Bera joins the U.S. House after defeating Representative Dan Lungren, who has a lifetime score of 4% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard through 2011 and the dubious distinction of being named to both LCV’s Dirty Dozen and Flat Earth Five campaigns this election cycle.

In his own words:
"The challenge to create a clean energy future is not only about preserving the earth’s beauty and resources for our children and grandchildren; it is about generating millions of new jobs, jumpstarting our economy, and improving the health and quality of life for our families and communities. America can lead the way in this shift to a cleaner, more sustainable future."
