FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced it will devote significant resources to defeating Rep. Francisco Canseco (TX-23) in the general election. Canseco has been named to LCV’s $1.5 million Flat Earth Five program for his extreme anti-science positions. The program aims to defeat five climate change deniers in the House of Representatives this election cycle. LCV has already spent nearly $300,000 in this race.
“If Rep. Canseco can’t acknowledge basic scientific facts, he shouldn’t be serving in Congress,” said Navin Nayak, Senior Vice President of Campaigns.
Canseco has earned a spot on the program by ignoring overwhelming scientific consensus – responding to the EPA’s limits on harmful carbon pollution by stating that “passing environmental regulations based on reportedly manufactured global warming data is utterly the wrong direction for our country.”
Canseco joins Reps. Dan Lungren (CA-3), Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-24) and Dan Benishek (MI-1) on the Flat Earth Five program. The final name will be announced next week.
As part of the Flat Earth Five program, LCV will be spending at least $1.5 million across these five districts on television advertising, direct mail and an extensive phone program letting voters know that these members of Congress are dangerously out-of-step with their district. The program also includes LCV member mobilization and a strong media presence in the districts. More information about the Flat Earth Five can be found online at http://www.lcv.org/
Canseco has also cosponsored a bill to gut the Clean Air Act and voted for legislation rolling back clean water safeguards. His voting record has earned him a horrible 3% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
The non-partisan scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://www.lcv.org/scorecard.
