Post from LCV Communications Associate Lea Brumfield:

Despite the Obama administration’s rejection of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline less than a month ago, Republican leaders in the Senate and Big Oil are trying to resurrect the toxic oil pipeline.

Having failed to pass the Keystone XL bill as a piece of stand-alone legislation, supporters of the pipeline are trying to attach a new provision for the pipeline to an infrastructure bill with bipartisan support. currently being debated in the Senate.  Ignoring independent studies that show more jobs could be destroyed than created by the pipeline, and the reality that the oil pumped through the pipeline would be exported, this new provision would also strip the State Department of responsibility for approving the pipeline, clearing the way for a speedy approval and allowing construction on the pipeline to start immediately.

In response, LCV and other environmental organizations are rallying opposition in a 24 hour email blitz, asking for constituents to email their senators demanding a “No” vote on the Keystone XL pipeline.  From 12pm Monday, February 13th, to 12pm Tuesday, February 14th, the online campaign is planning to deliver at least 500,000 signatures and messages to Sen. Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, and Republican Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority Leader.
