The Senate got a whole lot greener this morning following environmental champion Ed Markey’s swearing in as the new U.S. Senator from Massachusetts. Senator Markey was elected the same day that President Obama delivered his historic climate address last month –together, there’s new momentum building in the fight against climate change.

Markey campaigned aggressively on the issue of climate change and launched numerous ads highlighting his commitment to tackling the climate crisis. He campaigned so aggressively on the issue that National Journal wrote Markey is “doing something that’s never been done before: campaigning for national office on the signature issue of climate change.”

“It’s fitting that on the same day that President Obama outlined an ambitious agenda to reduce carbon pollution, Massachusetts voters have sent one of the country’s biggest climate leaders to the Senate,” said Scott Nathan, Chairman of the League of Conservation Voters, the night of Sen. Markey’s election win.

An article in Mass Live provides the climate highlights of Markey’s encouraging victory speech, saying, “Markey pledged to ‘seek change that lifts up your families and your future.’ He said he wants to lead a ‘green energy revolution,’ to create jobs, combat climate change and reduce dependence on foreign oil.”

Senator Ed Markey is proof that the momentum for action on climate change has passed a tipping point, and we’re excited to work with him in the Senate. Watch the swearing in ceremony here:
