False News on Green Energy

Fox News personality Bill O’Reilly bashed the Obama administration’s investments in clean energy last week on his show, claiming, “the feds have not been able to make progress in the green area despite spending many, many billions of dollars.”

“Time after time after time, green energy investments prove to be unworthy,” he said.

No matter how much O’Reilly tries to deny it, the facts on green energy’s success show otherwise. The clean energy sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the United States, growing almost three times as fast as the national economy between 2003 and 2010 – in spite of the recession which has made most other industries stagnant on job creation. Wind power capacity grew 60 percent between 2008 and 2010, while solar capacity grew 120 percent.

Federal programs to spur and expand investment in clean tech have played a major role in all of that. Incentives to develop more efficient technologies have helped dramatically decrease the price of producing renewable energy, making it more competitive and leading to the massive increase in capacity.

It’s sad to see O’Reilly and Fox News again refusing to tell the truth on the success of green energy. They continue to spread misinformation and in the process turn their backs on a proven job-creating industry with massive potential.
