“Climate change is real,” New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie said Friday shortly after vetoing S2946—legislation requiring the state to remain a participant in the  ten-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) that was designed to address climate change. The Governor went on to add, “human activity plays a role in these changes,” and that climate change was “impacting our state.”

The New Jersey legislature passed the bill after Governor Christie announced earlier this year that he was withdrawing the state from the cap and trade carbon-reduction program.

New Jersey is known for its historically poor air quality.
