The House’s Energy and Power subcommittee approved via voice-vote on Wednesday legislation requiring President Obama to make a decision on the pending permit application for the Keystone XL tar sands project.
The legislation must still be approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee before it is brought before the full House for a vote. GOP leadership has indicated plans to have the legislation on the House floor by July.
Existing lines of the Keystone project sprang two leaks last month, raising concerns over the TransCanada’s ability to prevent future accidents. Additionally, oil sand production releases higher concentrations of harmful carbon pollution than traditional oil production.
