LCV is ramping up our efforts to hold members of Congress accountable for consistently voting for Big Oil and against life-saving EPA public health safeguards. In the past weeks, ad campaigns have been launched against Senator Scott Brown in Massachusetts, Representative Dan Benishek in Michigan, Senator Rand Paul in Kentucky, and Representative Jason Altmire in Pennsylvania.
The ads against Scott Brown and Dan Benishek highlight their voting records in favor of Big Oil. The Brown ad released early last week stressed his abysmal 0% LCV rating and votes in favor of keeping taxpayer handouts to Big Oil. Brown responded with a counterattack online ad. Dan Benishek’s recent votes and comments defending tax breaks to Big Oil puts him in the limelight in the ad released on Tuesday in Michigan’s 1st District. Despite record profits of over $100 billion this year, Benishek claims oil companies pay “their fair share” and has voted to maintain subsidies totally over $6,000 per minute to these companies.
The ads against Paul and Altmire come at a critical time when EPA public health safeguards have come under serious attack in Congress. The ad running on Sen. Paul, hitting the airwaves today, holds the Senator accountable for leading legislation to stop reductions in dangerous pollution from power plants. Similarly, the ad against Altmire, run in partnership with the NRDC Action Fund focuses on Rep. Altmire’s consistent record of blocking the clean-up of dangerous pollution, , including mercury which is especially dangerous to pregnant mothers and children.
All of the ads call on viewers to contact these members of Congress and urge them to vote with their constituents’ interests, not those of Big Oil and corporate polluters.
