Obama Administration Rejects Keystone XL

Today the Obama administration announced it is rejecting the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. LCV President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement in response:

"Today is a great day for putting the American people before polluter profits. We strongly applaud the Obama administration for standing up to Big Oil and rejecting the dangerous Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. The oil industry has spent millions of dollars lobbying for this pipeline because it would have added to their $100 billion in profits from last year. President Obama is right to reject this pipeline that would put the health and livelihoods of Americans at risk in order to allow oil companies to export the dirtiest oil on the planet."

As Big Oil's congressional allies rail against this decision, it worth keeping in mind two important factoids:

  1. An independent study of the jobs impact of the dirty pipeline found that more jobs could be destroyed than created by the pipeline. (Via Tar Sands Action)
  2. Clean energy policies create more jobs than the pipeline. (Via Grist)
