Oil-funded group sues New York to end RGGI

Americans for Prosperity, an anti-climate science group funded by the Koch Brothers, filed suit Monday in the New York Supreme Court against the state’s participation in the 10-state cap and trade program known as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI).

The lawsuit is only the latest in a slew of challenges to RGGI across multiple states. In May, Governor Chris Christie announced plans to withdraw New Jersey from the program, while New Hampshire faces direct challenges to the program from within its legislature.

New York has raised over $320 million in the past three years through RGGI, with much of that revenue being used towards funding projects such as a clean energy jobs initiative, energy efficiency and home weatherization programs.
