Poll Finds American Voters Support Cutting Subsidies to Big Oil

03 Mar 2011  |   Daniel Jacobs

A recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal Survey finds that a vast majority of American voters believe it is "totally acceptable" to eliminate tax credits for the oil and gas industry.

The survey - conducted Feb. 24-28 among 1,000 adults - listed 26 different ways to reduce the federal budget deficit. Eliminating tax credits for the oil and gas industries was among the most popular cuts polled with a staggering 74 percent of respondents stating they found it acceptable.

The poll strongly contrasts with yesterday's actions of the House of Representatives, which by a vote of 179???249, opposed a motion to recommit on an amendment to end tax breaks for large oil companies. The vote was cast primarily along party lines, as all Republicans and only thirteen Democrats voted against the measure.
