According to Reuters, the United Nations Environmental Unit (UNEP) found that clean energy investments rose by more than $20 billion in 2010, and will likely rise by an additional $40 billion in 2011.
Pavan Sukhdev, director of UNEP's Green Economy initiative stated that in 2011, "Investment may be close to $240 billion in clean energy that includes energy efficiency and renewable energy."
Rising from $162 billion in 2009 to between $180 and $200 billion in 2010, increased renewable energy investments from nations worldwide indicate the global need for inexpensive energy sources ??? including solar and wind ??? to meet a growing demand for energy while simultaneously combating the detrimental effects of climate change.
