Ret. Cmdr. Allen: More Investment Needed for Oil Spill Prevention

15 Feb 2011  |   Damien Shirley

Retired Coast Guard Commander Thad Allen told the House Subcommittee on the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation that the federal government must invest more to prevent future oil spills.

Commander Allen was the government's point man on last year's Deepwater Horizion spill, which was the largest accidental marine oil spill in history. Allen told the subcommittee that the Interagency Coordinating Committee on Oil Pollution Research--which was created in the wake of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill--"must receive permanent funding for research and development through annual distributions."

The ICCOPR hasn't been regularly funded since 1995.
