Senate Dems to Boehner: End Tax Breaks for Big Oil

09 Feb 2011  |   Damien Shirley

The Hill reports that top Senate Democrats sent a letter to Speaker Boehner today calling for him and the House GOP to end tax breaks for the oil industry, a move that would save taxpayers more than $20 billion over the next 10 years.

The letter reads, in part, "[i]t defies common sense to cut programs that are creating jobs, helping jumpstart our manufacturing sector and strengthening the middle class while protecting taxpayer-funded handouts to big oil companies that add little to our economic or energy security."

Ending subsidies for the oil industry was one of the focal points of President Obama's state of the union speech last month.
