Stop Rand Paul’s Extreme Attack on Clean Air

Tea Party darling Rand Paul is leading a reckless attack on clean air that would permanently eliminate vital public health safeguards that protect millions of children and families from dangerous air pollution.

Senator Paul is using an obscure procedural move to force a vote that would block the EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution rule, a critical environmental protection that specifically targets the pollution that crosses state borders. This assault on clean air would roll back public health protections and let polluters continue to dump their toxic pollution into our air.

Not only does Senator Paul's attack abolish health standards that will save tens of thousands of lives every year, his resolution would prevent EPA from re-issuing similar standards to reduce power plant smog and soot pollution that crosses into other states – permanently blocking any ability to set these public health safeguards.

More pollution doesn’t create jobs; but it does cost lives. Senator Paul's dirty air plan will lead to as many as 34,000 premature deaths, 15,000 heart attacks, and 400,000 asthma attacks annually. The cost is also measured in lost opportunity for innovation and development of pollution cutting technologies.

We do not have to choose between a safe environment and a strong economy. The two go hand-in-hand. In fact, clean air standards have contributed more than $2 trillion in economic benefits to the American economy since 1990 and can spark innovation that creates jobs.

A vote on this resolution is expected tomorrow. Click here to urge your senators to reject Seantor Paul's extreme attack on clean air.
