SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO – Conservation Voters of New Mexico (CVNM) Executive Director Demis Foster and League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski released this statement following U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich’s introduction of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks Conservation Act, which would designate the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and protect significant areas across Dona Ana County:

“The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks are a rich source of natural beauty that deserves permanent protection as a national monument so that future generations can enjoy this iconic landscape. Senators Udall and Heinrich have led the way in working with local stakeholders to preserve this area, and this legislation is a win for tourists and the local economy.  We have a responsibility to protect special places like the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks, and both parties should come together and pass this commonsense legislation.”
