MICHIGAN –Today, the House passed legislation introduced by Chairman Upton to block the EPA from applying commonsense safeguards to curb harmful pollution and protect public health. Yesterday, the U.S. Senate rejected four amendments, including the McConnell amendment that was identical to the Upton bill. Senator Stabenow introduced and voted for her own amendment while Senator Levin voted for the Baucus amendment – both amendments failed overwhelmingly.

League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski and Michigan League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Lisa Wozniak issued the following joint statement:

“It is absolutely reprehensible that House Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Upton would spearhead legislation to protect polluter profits and weaken public health protections. MLCV and LCV will work to ensure this dangerous vote does not go unnoticed, and that the people of Michigan know that Chairman Upton is actively working to permanently block the EPA from protecting the health of Michigan families.

While Senators Stabenow and Levin opposed the most egregious amendments considered in the Senate, we are very disappointed that both voted to limit the EPA’s ability to protect public health.”
