SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO – Conservation Voters New Mexico Executive Director Demis Foster and League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski released this statement ahead of today’s public meeting in New Mexico’s Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks region. The meeting, hosted by U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich and Tom Udall and attended by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, is meant to give local residents the chance to share their vision for how the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks region can be permanently protected.

“Senator Heinrich, Senator Udall and Secretary Jewell deserve a lot of credit for giving local residents the chance to talk about the importance of protecting this natural and historical treasure. It would be a win for the environment and win for the local economy, which would see more tourism and new jobs. Secretary Jewell and President Obama should respond to the overwhelming and diverse support across Dona Ana County and designate the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument.”
