BILLINGS - Today, Montana Hunters and Anglers Leadership Fund, Montana Conservation Voters and the League of Conservation Voters announced a major partnership to defeat Congressman Dennis Rehberg's bid to represent Montana in the United States Senate. Next week, a $350,000 television ad campaign will begin airing targeting Rehberg's record on issues related to Montana's outdoor heritage.

"We are joining forces because Congressman Rehberg is anti-hunter and anti-fisherman, plain and simple," said Land Tawney of Missoula, president of Montana Hunters and Anglers Leadership Fund. "His record after being in Congress for 12 years just doesn't pass the smell test, Rehberg's even gone so far as to post no trespassing signs on public land claiming it was his own."

"Montanans have a clear choice in this election," said Theresa Keaveny of Billings director of Montana Conservation Voters. "We've been talking to thousands of Montanans door-to-door, and many people are wondering who Congressman Rehberg is anymore. He is hostile to people who hike, camp, hunt or fish. Those aren't our Montana values."

"If Dennis Rehberg and Congress get their way, Homeland Security will be taking control of millions of acres of public land in Montana," said Navin Nayak of LCV. "No one wants to go to their favorite hunting spot only to find it fenced off but that is exactly Rehberg’s plan."

The ad, launching this week in the Billings, Missoula, and Great Falls markets, is sponsored by the Montana Hunters and Anglers Leadership Fund and will air through July.  The League of Conservation Voters has spent an additional $337,053 on door to door canvassing to date in Montana.

The groups are particularly upset with Rehberg for his co-sponsorship of H.R. 1505, by Congressman Bob Bishop of Utah. The controversial legislation allows the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to gain 'operational control' of federal lands within 100 miles of the Canadian border.
