WASHINGTON – On the 40th anniversary of the Clean Water Act, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today reminded voters of Rep. Dan Lungren’s (CA-07) assault on the environment, including his vote to dismantle the landmark legislation. The Clean Water Act, passed by Congress on this day in 1972, set a national goal to eliminate all water pollution.

“Congressman Lungren voted to dismantle the Clean Water Act, which would threaten California’s waterways and endanger public health,” said Navin Nayak, LCV Senior Vice President for Campaigns.

Lungren voted for the so-called Clean Water Cooperative Federalism Act of 2011, legislation that would dismantle the Clean Water Act.  The legislation would threaten waterways Americans depend on for swimming, fishing, and drinking by crippling the EPA’s ability to set water quality standards.

LCV and the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) have launched a $380,000 mail program highlighting Lungren’s votes to dismantle the Clean Water Act and allow polluters to keep spewing dangerous mercury pollution into our water and air.

Lungren has a lifetime score of just 4% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan LCV National Environmental Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. In July, LCV named Lungren to its $2 million “Flat Earth Five” program, which aims to defeat five climate change deniers in the House of Representatives this election cycle. More information about the Flat Earth Five can be found online at http://www.lcv.org/flatearthfive.
