WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Bill Nelson for reelection to the U.S. Senate. Senator Nelson has a strong record of supporting clean air and clean water, and holding corporate polluters accountable. Nelson earned a stellar 100% score on LCV’s 2011 National Environmental Scorecard.
“Bill Nelson has been fighting to defend public health safeguards for families, hold Big Oil polluters accountable, and preserve Florida’s precious natural resources,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Bill Nelson for reelection because of his strong support for clean air and clean water, and for standing up to corporate polluters.”
Senator Bill Nelson is running for a third term in the U.S. Senate, where he has been a strong defender of the environment. Recognizing the Gulf of Mexico’s importance to Florida’s economy, Nelson has fought hard to prevent further expansion of offshore drilling in the Gulf and was a leader on the RESTORE Act, an effort he shepherded into law to ensure that penalties from the catastrophic BP Gulf oil spill go directly to citizens affected by the spill and towards restoring the Gulf Coast. Nelson strongly believes that our dependence on oil is one of the greatest threats to our national security, which is why he advocates for greater research and development of cleaner transportation fuels and fuel efficiency. He also strongly supports investing in the clean energy sector and he has helped Florida’s clean economy grow to include over 100,000 American jobs.
In sharp contrast, Senator Nelson’s opponent in the general election, Rep. Connie Mack, earned a dismal 6% on the 2011 National Environmental Scorecard. He has voted repeatedly to gut the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts and to protect taxpayer-funded subsidies for Big Oil.
“I thank LCV for its support of our efforts to keep Florida's environment clean," said Sen. Nelson. "A clean environment is good business. I also want to thank them for helping me keep the Big Oil companies away from Florida's shores and tourism-driven economy, and for their help in restoring the Everglades.”
The non-partisan LCV National Environmental Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://www.lcv.org/scorecard.
