WASHINGTON, DC— The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Dan Kildee for re-election to Congress (MI-5). Congressman Kildee has fought to protect our environment, including access to clean water and Michigan’s Great Lakes.
“Congressman Kildee is a true environmental champion, fighting every day to ensure our children and grandchildren inherit a safe and healthy planet,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “He has consistently fought to end tax breaks for Big Oil companies while working to grow our clean energy economy.”
“Congressman Kildee has shown himself to be a leader who fights tirelessly for the constituents and communities he represents,” said Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Congressman Kildee was one of the first to call attention to the public health crisis gripping his hometown of Flint and remains one of the strongest voices for Michigan. During his time in Congress, he has proven that he is ready and able to fight for the clean water that every Michigander deserves and understands firsthand just how critical it is to our health, economy and way of life."
”I am honored to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, which understands the importance of protecting our environment for our children and grandchildren,” Congressman Kildee said. “In my hometown, the League of Conservation Voters has been an outspoken advocate for Flint families and the right for everyone to have access to clean drinking water. I look forward to continue championing ideas that will help to protect our land, air and ensure that Michiganders can compete in a twenty-first century economy."
Congressman Dan Kildee was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. He was elected to the Flint Board of Education at the age of 18, becoming one of the youngest elected officials in the nation. From 1977 to 1985, Kildee served on the school board and as manager of the Whaley Children’s Center before becoming Genesee County Treasurer in 1985. Kildee founded the Genesee Land Bank and co-founded Community Progress, where he served as president until May 2012 when he ran for and won his congressional seat.
Time and again, Congressman Kildee has demonstrated his commitment to the environment, including co-sponsoring legislation to end Big Oil subsidies and supporting efforts to expand America’s clean energy and energy efficiency industries. He recognizes the important role clean water plays for all Michigan families, which is why he has worked tirelessly to bring attention and aid to the residents of Flint suffering from the lead water crisis, co-sponsored legislation to combat the threats of invasive species in the Great Lakes and voted consistently to defend the Clean Water Act. Congressman Kildee also works hard to protect our natural treasures—he co-sponsored legislation to safeguard Michigan’s public lands and supports efforts to fully fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
Kildee has earned a 96 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a member’s record. For more information, visit http://scorecard.lcv.org.
Kildee is featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions for federal office.
About LCV Action Fund
The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund (LCVAF), the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental laws and policies, and defeat those who stand in the way of progress. Since the 1994 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 69 U.S. Senators and 306 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections. Some of our recent successes include:
• In the 2013-2014 election cycle, LCVAF endorsed over 70 candidates and raised and donated almost $6 million dollars via GiveGreen.
• In 2014, LCVAF endorsed U.S. Representative Gary Peters for U.S. Senate from Michigan and U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen for re-election in New Hampshire. In their successful campaigns, both spoke out forcefully and passionately about our need to combat climate change and expand the clean energy economy, proving that these are winning issues.
• In the 2012 and 2014 election cycles, LCVAF provided early endorsements and support to help climate champions like Representatives Julia Brownley (CA-26), Matt Cartwright (PA-17), Ruben Gallego (AZ-7) and Jared Huffman (CA-2) win their first primary and general elections to the U.S. House of Representatives.
