WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Frank LoBiondo for re-election to Congress (NJ-2). During his nearly two decades in Congress, Representative LoBiondo has built a reputation as a strong defender of New Jersey’s environment and an ally in the fight to address climate change and protect our nation’s natural resources.
“Congressman Frank LoBiondo has been there time and again on the most pressing environmental issues facing New Jersey and our country,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “We need more allies in the Republican Party like Congressman LoBiondo who understand that a healthy environment and a strong economy aren’t in conflict—they go hand-in-hand.”
“Congressman Frank LoBiondo is a proven ally fighting for the health of New Jersey and our environment, even in the most challenging of Congresses,” said Ed Potosnak, Executive Director of the New Jersey League of Conservation Voters. “He is a true steward of our state’s remarkable natural landscapes, and we can trust he will continue to protect our land and our coasts for future generations.”
"Working together for many years to preserve New Jersey's environmental treasures for future generations, I'm once again honored to receive LCVAF’s endorsement," said Congressman Frank LoBiondo (NJ-02). "I remain committed to promoting policies that equally protect public health, our environment and American jobs. I've had a great working relationship with local environmental groups and concerned citizens in South Jersey throughout my time in Congress and look forward to continuing that same partnership."
Congressman LoBiondo has been a leader on protecting New Jersey’s environment. He is a champion for three of South Jersey’s environmental treasures, the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, and the Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. New Jersey’s beaches and coastal economy can also count on Congressman LoBiondo’s steadfast opposition to drilling off the Jersey Shore and to the federal government’s misguided proposal to conduct seismic testing for oil and gas in the Atlantic, which consists of sonic blasts that would kill marine life and harm fisheries.
Representative LoBiondo has not been afraid to buck many in his party when environmental priorities like clean energy, clean air, and a healthy climate are on the line. In 2009 he was one of only eight Republicans who voted for the American Clean Energy and Security Act, the landmark clean energy and climate bill that passed the House of Representatives that would’ve created millions of clean energy jobs and reduced dangerous carbon pollution. This year he was one of just three House Republicans to vote against a bill that would strip the EPA of its ability to limit harmful carbon pollution and protect public health. He has also cosponsored legislation that would establish a national renewable energy standard requiring utilities to purchase steadily increasing amounts of clean energy.
Congressman LoBiondo has also worked to protect America’s natural heritage. He has cosponsored legislation that would permanently protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by designating its coastal plain as wilderness. Congressman LoBiondo also voted to preserve a president’s authority to protect special places as national monuments using the Antiquities Act, the tool used by presidents of both parties to preserve iconic places ranging from the Grand Canyon to the Statue of Liberty.
His voting record has earned Congressman LoBiondo a lifetime score of 63% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard, one of the highest scores among Republicans in Congress. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://scorecard.lcv.org.
