WASHINGTON, DC – Today the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced its endorsement of Derek Kilmer for the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington’s 6th district. Kilmer served in the state House of Representatives from 2005-2007 before being elected to his current office in the state Senate.
“Derek Kilmer has consistently prioritized clean air and water protection in his political career, and recently sponsored a successful jobs bill that will not only clean up the Puget Sound, but will also create hundreds of jobs in his state,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Derek Kilmer to represent western Washington because he understands that environmental protection and a strong economy go hand in hand, and he is poised to be an environmental champion in Congress.”
During his career in the state legislature, Kilmer has advocated for investments in Puget Sound restoration, industrial site cleanup, development of water systems infrastructure, removal of asbestos in water pipes, and expansion of the Cushman Trail in Gig Harbor, earning him a strong 83% lifetime score on the Washington Conservation Voters Legislative Scorecard. He was the lead sponsor of a historic energy efficiency proposal that became law, and he co-sponsored other legislation on biofuels, ocean protection, and efforts to prevent and mitigate the impacts of oil spills.
“Much of my academic and professional life has been driven by my interest in fostering a more sustainable environment, more sustainable communities, and sustainable economies,” said Derek Kilmer. “I’m proud that in my three state legislative campaigns, I have been supported by Washington Conservation Voters, and I’m very honored to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters. Too often we have been faced with the false choice of jobs or protecting our environment. As the father of two little girls, one with asthma, I believe it is critically important to protect the air they breathe, the water they drink, and the earth we will pass on to them. Protecting our clean air and water will be two of my top priorities in Congress and I will fight for investment in a clean energy economy that will protect our natural resources and our health while putting America back to work.”
