WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Dr. Richard Carmona for U.S. Senate from Arizona. Throughout his career, Dr. Carmona has stood up for public health safeguards and would champion clean energy technologies that create jobs in Arizona and across the country.

“Richard Carmona’s career is built around standing up for public health and working with members of both parties to solve our biggest problems. He would lead the way in defending safeguards protecting Arizona families and champion clean energy technologies to create jobs here at home.  LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse Richard Carmona,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski.

“We need leaders like Dr. Carmona that are committed to standing up for Arizona’s precious natural resources and protecting public health,” said Steve Arnquist, Executive Director of the Arizona League of Conservation Voters.

Dr. Richard Carmona’s experiences serving as an Special Forces medic, registered nurse, trauma surgeon and U.S. Surgeon General has made him a staunch advocate for public health safeguards and has worked across party lines to address the public health and national security challenges posed by climate change. He also understands that investing in clean energy is an investment in American jobs, and would champion technologies that further America’s energy independence while creating jobs.

In contrast, his likely opponent in the general election, 12-year incumbent Congressman and former uranium mining lobbyist, Rep. Jeff Flake, has earned an appalling 9% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan LCV National Environmental Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s position. For more information, visit http://www.lcv.org/scorecard.

LCV Action Fund also highlighted the findings of a poll that shows this Senate race among the most competitive in the nation. The poll found Rep. Flake and Dr. Carmona tied among registered voters at 38%.

Carmona is featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, http://www.givegreen.com, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates.
