Highlights stark differences between Heck and Cortez Masto
Las Vegas, NV - Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) significantly expanded its persuasion canvass effort in support of Catherine Cortez Masto for Senate in Nevada. Today’s announcement builds on the initial $260,000 independent expenditure campaign announced in April for an anticipated total of nearly $1.4 million through Election Day. This expansion also comes shortly after naming Rep. Joe Heck to LCV’s Dirty Dozen list in June.
The campaign will continue to highlight the stark differences between Catherine Cortez Masto, who advocates for expanding renewable energy for Nevadans, and Rep. Joe Heck, whose record of putting big polluters’ interests’ first has resulted in his miserable 8 percent LCV lifetime score in Congress and earned him the dubious distinction of a place on LCV’s Dirty Dozen list.
“Nevada’s families need to be represented by someone who will help Nevada become a solar energy leader and fight to protect our clean air and water – and that person is Catherine Cortez Masto,” said Nevada Conservation League Executive Director Andy Maggi. “While she has a record we can count on, Joe Heck is in the pocket of the big polluters that have contributed more than $400,000 to his campaigns.”
“We are making this investment in the Nevada Senate race because voters have a clear choice between environmental champion Catherine Cortez Masto and climate science denier Joe Heck,” said LCV National Campaigns Director Clay Schroers. “Heck is dangerously out of touch with Nevada’s families, who can’t afford to be represented by someone who rejects the conclusions of 97 percent of climate scientists, wants to block the Clean Power Plan and consistently fights clean air and water protections. To make sure Nevadans hear our message in an election year that has already seen a great deal of attention at the top of the ticket, we are building a robust campaign to engage with voters in their communities.”
As an expansion of the independent expenditure field campaign announced in April, this persuasion canvass will make two passes through a universe of 152,000 voters in Henderson, Las Vegas and North Las Vegas. Based on an analysis of the initial April campaign, this canvass will communicate with voters with vote propensity scores above 50 and partisanship scores between 20 and 90.
This is LCV’s largest independent expenditure campaign so far in 2016. In the presidential race, LCV and LCV Victory Fund have engaged in digital advertising and a direct mail campaign supporting Hillary Clinton in early primary states, including Nevada.
In 2014, LCV, LCV Victory Fund, and state LCVs invested a record total of over $30 million -- by far the most that LCV has ever spent. Federal races accounted for over $19 million of total spending, while LCV and state LCVs combined to spend over $10 million on state elections.
