WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today launched a new $200,000 television ad campaign against “Flat Earth Five” member Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-24) for her extreme environmental voting record and for siding with Tea Party extremists like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh in denying the existence of climate change, which she has called a “myth.” The ad, “Support,” begins airing tomorrow in the Syracuse media market and will run through October 23rd.

“In denying climate science and voting to block environmental safeguards, Buerkle has embraced the extreme Tea Party agenda of Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh,” said Navin Nayak, LCV Senior Vice President for Campaigns.

In addition to highlighting her climate denial, the ad also hits Buerkle’s votes to block rules limiting toxic mercury pollution that causes birth defects, respiratory illnesses and premature deaths. Buerkle has also repeatedly voted to gut the Clean Air Act and voted to dismantle the Clean Water Act.

In July, LCV launched a new $2 million “Flat Earth Five” program, which aims to defeat five climate change deniers in the House of Representatives this election cycle. As part of this program, LCV is committing significant resources to defeating Buerkle, Rep. Dan Benishek (MI-01), Rep. Dan Lungren (CA-07), Rep. Francisco Canseco (TX-23) and Rep. Joe Walsh (IL-08).  More information about the Flat Earth Five can be found online at

LCV also announced today that is has launched a new billboard campaign targeting Buerkle for her extreme, anti-science views on climate change that align her with Limbaugh and Palin rather than her constituents. Last week, LCV launched a web video hitting members of their “Flat Earth Five” campaign for their outlandish and inaccurate comments on global warming and climate change science. The video includes Buerkle’s statement that climate change is a “myth.”
