WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today launched a new phone campaign targeting members of their “Flat Earth Five” program, highlighting their extreme, anti-science views on climate change. LCV will make more than 100,000 phone calls to voters across the five Congressional districts as part of their effort to unseat Rep. Dan Benishek (MI-01), Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle (NY-24), Rep. Dan Lungren (CA-07), Rep. Francisco Canseco (TX-23), and Rep. Joe Walsh (IL-08).
“Having the same extreme anti-science positions as Sarah Palin may make these Congressmen the darling of the Tea Party, but it will make voters choose a new direction in November,” said Navin Nayak, LCV Senior Vice President of Campaigns.
The phone campaign is part of LCV’s $2 million Flat Earth Five program, which aims to defeat five climate change deniers in the House of Representatives this election cycle. Last week, LCV launched a $600,000 television ad campaign against Rep. Canseco for voting to provide tax cuts for millionaires like him while slashing job-creating investments in clean energy. The Michigan League of Conservation Voters launched a $330,000 television ad campaign last month criticizing Rep. Benishek for his efforts to slash clean water standards protecting the Great Lakes and touting McDowell’s proven record of holding polluters accountable. As part of the ad campaign, two ads ran on broadcast and cable in the Traverse City and Marquette media markets.
LCV will continue dedicating significant resources across these five districts, including television advertising and direct mail, to let voters know that these members of Congress are dangerously out-of-step with their district on the issue of climate change. More information about the Flat Earth Five can be found online at http://www.lcv.org/flatearthfive.

On climate change, Tea Party politician Dan Benishek is part of the problem in Washington that’s ignoring the challenges facing our country. Congressman Benishek has taken over $94,000 in campaign contributions from oil and gas companies and he denies that climate change is even occurring. He has said that climate change is quote “all baloney” and “just some scheme.” This extreme position puts him at odds with scientists, the Pentagon and the people of Michigan. How can we trust Congressman Benishek to address climate change when he won’t even acknowledge that it’s happening?
