Part of nationwide campaign to hold climate change deniers accountable
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today launched a second ad as part of its television ad campaign criticizing Representative Dan Benishek for denying the proven science of climate change. The ad begins running this week in the Traverse City and Marquette markets and is part of a nearly $2 million nationwide LCV campaign to hold climate change deniers in Congress accountable for their extreme voting records.
“Congressman Benishek is following Big Oil’s playbook and denying the basic scientific facts on climate change instead of doing what’s best for his constituents,” said Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters.
The ad highlights that Rep. Benishek has taken more than $130,000 from the oil and gas industry and repeatedly voted against efforts to reduce carbon pollution. Documentation for the ad can be found here.
LCV launched the first ad of this campaign last week, which criticized Rep. Benishek for claiming that climate change is “all baloney” and “just some scheme,” despite the devastating impact of extreme weather that climate change is fueling.
Rep. Benishek’s positions are out of step with his constituents, and LCV urges them to contact the Congressman to tell him that it’s time to stop denying the science and act on climate change. According to NASA, human activity is contributing to climate change, and that extreme weather is increasing due to climate change.
Rep. Benishek’s extreme voting record has earned him an abysmal 6% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. For more information, visit http://scorecard.lcv.org.
