KENTUCKY – Today, the League of Conservation Voters launched a new television ad in Kentucky blasting Senator Rand Paul for leading efforts to endanger the health of Kentucky families and blocking the EPA from implementing necessary pollution safeguards. The television ad, which encourages Kentuckians to contact Senator Paul, will run on broadcast and cable in the Lexington media market.
"Senator Paul should be working in Washington to protect his constituents from dangerous pollution, not leading efforts to allow out of state polluters to endanger the health and well-being of Kentucky families," said Gene Karpinski, LCV President. "With votes any day on Senator Paul’s irresponsible legislation to block the EPA from cleaning up power plants, it’s vital that his constituents are aware of his reckless efforts to gut vital health protections."
Senator Paul introduced radical legislation to void the Cross State Air Pollution Rule, a recently finalized public health safeguard developed by EPA scientists that would require power plants to decrease air pollution that travels across state lines. By 2014, the EPA estimates that annually the rule will prevent up to 34,000 premature deaths, 15,000 heart attacks, 400,000 asthma attacks and 1.8 million missed work or school days. [SJRes 27; EPA Air Transport Fact Sheet] Almost 335,000 adults and nearly 100,000 children suffer from asthma in Kentucky. [American Lung Association, August 2011] The Senate is expected to vote on this legislation as soon as next week.
