WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the U.S. Interior Department announced approval of Shell’s Oil Spill Response Plan for its proposal to conduct exploratory drilling in the Arctic Ocean.  League of Conservation Voters Legislative Representative Alex Taurel issued the following statement in response:

“We are deeply disappointed by today’s announcement because there is no evidence that oil companies can contain or clean up an oil spill in the icy, remote waters of the Arctic Ocean.  Shell in particular has a shoddy safety record, having presided just last year over the worst oil spill in a decade in the United Kingdom’s North Sea.  Instead of more risky offshore drilling, the Administration should redouble its longstanding commitment to a modern transportation system that includes more fuel-efficient cars, electric vehicles and mass transit that will help reduce our nation’s addiction to oil.”
