WASHINGTON—This week Congress is slated to vote on payroll tax legislation and the omnibus spending bill, both considered must-pass legislation.  Republican leaders in Congress have attached anti-environmental riders to the tax package to force the Obama administration to expedite a decision on the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and to block proposed clean air safeguards for industrial boilers and incinerators, and they are pushing for additional anti-environmental riders in the omnibus.

LCV Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld released the following statement on these efforts to cater to corporate polluters:

“With so many giveaways and sweeteners being piled on to this year-end legislation, it’s like Christmas come early to Big Oil and other corporate polluters. Republican leaders pushing reckless anti-environmental riders in this must-pass legislation are giving the ‘gift’ of more pollution at the cost of the health and well-being of all Americans. We call on members of the House and Senate to focus solely on the job at hand and to reject all efforts to use unrelated legislation to expedite the dangerous Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, weaken clean air safeguards, or push other anti-environmental riders.”

LCV policy staff are available for comment on current anti-environmental efforts in the tax and omnibus legislation.

The following LCV letter was sent to members of Congress today:
