WASHINGTON - LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill:

“It is highly disappointing that one year later Congress has still not responded to the greatest environmental tragedy our nation has ever seen. That oil companies and their allies in Congress have successfully blocked an effective response to the Gulf Coast catastrophe is just further evidence of the stranglehold these companies continue to place on our nation’s energy policies, even as they reap record profits while taking billions in government handouts.

Whether it is the tragedy in the Gulf Coast a year ago, debilitating gas prices today or ongoing instability in the Middle East, it’s clear that our continued dependence on oil hurts our economy, threatens our security and harms our environment. Now, more than ever, we must renew our efforts to stand up to corporate polluters and transition towards a cleaner, more secure energy future.”
