WASHINGTON – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement on the passage of legislation in the U.S. House to expand offshore drilling:

“House Republican leadership once again demonstrated today that their energy policy is simple: oil above all. After voting to cut support for clean energy and extend billions in handouts for Big Oil last month, Republican leaders are on to the next phase of their oil above all energy strategy: promoting irresponsible drilling that puts our economy and our environment at risk.

In case there was any doubt that their votes today were all about protecting Big Oil’s record profits, Republican leaders also blocked a vote on Representative Tim Bishop's legislation to repeal billions in taxpayer handouts to the richest oil companies. As gasoline climbs to five dollars per gallon members of Congress must once and for all eliminate these unnecessary subsidies that allow oil companies to profit off consumers twice: once at the pump and again from our federal taxes.”
