WASHINGTON – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement on the passage of dirty water legislation (H.R. 2018) in the U.S. House, which undermines the Clean Water Act’s ability to protect our nation’s waters:

“While we commend those members of the U.S. House from both sides of the aisle who opposed this bold-faced attack on our nation’s waters, it is highly disappointing that this irresponsible and short-sighted legislation passed in the U.S. House.  Americans deserve and expect water that’s safe to drink, swim, and fish in.  Washington politicians who side with polluters on an issue as near and dear to voters as the safety of the water for their children do so at their own peril.  There is simply no excuse for undermining protections for waterways that are sources of drinking water for all Americans. We thank the Obama Administration for strongly opposing this legislation and urge Senators to do the same.”
