Washington DC—The League of Conservation Voters Deputy Legislative Director Alex Taurel released this statement following the introduction of the Closing Loopholes and Ending Arbitrary and Needless Evasion of Regulations (CLEANER) Act by Representatives Matt Cartwright (D-PA) and Jared Huffman (D-CA):

“Representatives Cartwright and Huffman deserve credit for leading on this important issue. Fracking is causing alarming environmental and health impacts in communities across the nation. This legislation is part of a broader effort to close loopholes in many of our nation’s most important environmental laws and require the fracking industry to play by the same rules as every other industry. Fracking is an inherently risky process, and this bill would ensure that the toxic waste it produces is covered by the landmark law that governs the safe disposal of hazardous materials.”
