WASHINGTON, DC – League of Conservation Voters (LCV) President Gene Karpinski released this statement following the Obama administration’s announcement that it has finalized historic new rules increasing national fuel economy standards to 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025, a move that is supported by automakers, labor, and environmentalists alike:

“This announcement is another reminder that we don’t have to choose between protecting the planet and strengthening our economy. This is the single biggest thing the United States government has ever done to reduce global warming. At the same time, these standards will also help cut our country’s dependence on oil, create new jobs here at home and save consumers money at the pump. We congratulate the Obama administration for crafting these landmark standards that will strengthen our economy and protect our environment.”
