WASHINGTON – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement on findings released today by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling:
“We commend the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling for their thorough investigation and final recommendations for stricter industry oversight, holding oil companies accountable for their mistakes and stressing the importance of funding restoration when catastrophe strikes. We are especially encouraged by the Commission’s caution against drilling in the fragile Arctic Ocean.
However, the tragedy in the Gulf Coast combined with the Commission’s findings that another catastrophic oil spill is possible points to an urgent need to transition our nation away from dangerous offshore drilling. We thank the Commission for their service and look forward to working with Congress and the Obama Administration to promote initiatives that will move us towards cleaner, more secure sources of energy.”
