WASHINGTON – League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement on passage through the House Energy and Commerce Committee of Chairman Fred Upton's legislation (H.R. 910) to block the EPA from applying commonsense safeguards to curb pollution and protect public health:
"The American people want scientists at the EPA--not politicians in Congress who take millions from Big Oil--to set air pollution limits that protect the health of our families. Yet today some Washington politicians voted to give big polluters a free pass to dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into the air we breathe. This extreme bill would also increase our dependence on oil by undermining fuel economy standards at a time when rising gas prices should spur us to use less oil, not more.
We are deeply disappointed by those politicians who sided with Big Oil and applaud those leaders who came down on the side of a healthy future for our children and our grandchildren. We call on Members of Congress to reject this legislation and any other bills that block, weaken or delay the continued implementation of vital safeguards that protect the health of our families. Most urgently, we call on Senators to oppose the Senate's version of this reckless legislation that was offered today in an amendment by Senator McConnell to unrelated small business legislation."
