WASHINGTON— Today, in response to President Obama’s announcement of a new framework that increases national fuel economy standards to 54.5 miles per gallon by the year 2025, LCV President Gene Karpinski released the following statement:
"While two miles down the road the House of Representatives is waging the biggest assault ever on vital environmental safeguards, this historic announcement reminds us of the valuable role that the federal government can play in helping consumers save money, strengthening the economy and protecting the planet.
We commend President Obama and his administration for continuing to pursue strong, clean vehicle standards, and we look forward to working with the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to ensure that the final standards are as strong as possible.”
According to analysis by the Union of Concerned Scientists and the Natural Resources Defense Council, this framework would cut oil consumption by as much as 1.5 million barrels per day, or 23 billion gallons of gasoline annually, by 2030.
