Washington DC—The League of Conservation Voters Deputy Legislative Director Alex Taurel released this statement following passage of legislation in the House today that fails to protect public health and the environment from the unsafe disposal of toxic coal ash:

“We’re producing more than 140 million tons of toxic coal ash nationwide every year. It’s loaded with harmful chemicals like arsenic and lead, and it’s all too often disposed of so improperly that it’s contaminating the water Americans rely on. The House should be letting the EPA do its job to protect public health, not standing in the way of implementing safeguards to keep these toxic chemicals out of our water.”
